THE NORUZ LECTURE SERIES

A Short History of the Foundation for Iranian Studies' Noruz lecture series
Each year around Noruz the Foundation for Iranian Studies, in cooperation with The George Washington University, organizes a public lecture on Iran under the title of 'The Annual Noruz Lecture Series by a Distinguished Scholar of Iranian Studies.' Each lecture is meant as a statement of a new idea or the summation of the work of a scholar in his or her field of concentration. Past lecturers include Khaliq Ahmad Nizami of the Aligarh Muslim University (1992), Gilbert Lazard of l'Academie des inscriptions et belles lettres (1993), Ezzat Negahban of the University of Pennsylvania (1994), Roger Savory of the University of Toronto (1995), and Guitty Azarpay of the University of California, Berkeley (1996), Ehsan Yarshater of Columbia University (1997, Peter Chelkowski of the New York University (1998), Seyyed Hossein Nasr of the George Washington University (1999), Jahangir Amuzegar (2000), and Pierre Briant of Collège de France (2001).

The 2001 Lecture
The FIS 2001 Noruz lecturer was Professor Pierre Briant of Collège de France. Professor Briant’s lecture, “The History of the Achaemenid Empire Today: New Trends and New Perspectives,” was delivered on Friday, March 23, 2001 at the George Washington University, Funger Hall, 2201 G street, Washington, DC. The lecture was followed by a reception around the “haft seen” table.
Professor Briant discussed the most recent developments in the study of the Achaemenid period, particularly in the following four areas: new archeological findings, the development of iconographic studies, reinterpretation of known documents, and a reexamination of the statistical approach to imperial control. Briant’s work constitutes the cutting edge of the contemporary Achaemenid studies. To access Professor Briant’s web page on Achaemenid studies, click http://www.achemenet.com/
